Adams was born in Cambridge on March 11, 1952, to Janet Adams (1927–2016), a nurse, and Christopher Douglas Adams (1927–85), a management consultant, computer salesman, former probation officer, and trainer on probationary group therapy procedures. After his birth, the family relocated to London's East End, where his sister Susan was born three years later. Douglas, Susan, and their mother went to an RSPCA animal sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex, which was maintained by his maternal grandparents after his parents' divorced in 1957.
